History

From the time he was a small child, Uncle Smitty was regaled with tales of his father and grandfather who worked tirelessly in the Manchester Millyard.  He heard stories about how they had to walk up hill to work (both ways) and how the hot sweaty mills afforded them no rest.  Not even a lunch break.  Often they would share a can of beans and warm them up on the machinery in the mill.  Even then, as a young lad, Uncle Smitty vowed that no millyard worker would ever suffer that same fate.

Years later, unsatisfied by traditional cafeteria fare, Uncle Smitty went on a quest to build a better but not your average cafeteria.  He was driven by a desire to bring extraordinary breakfast and lunch alternatives to all those who toiled in downtown Manchester.   And thus Café 324 was born.

Thanks to Uncle Smitty, the Mill workers finally enjoyed a wide variety of continental and hot breakfast selections, delicious lunch entrees, home-style soups, extraordinary salads, gourmet wraps, our famous gigantic chocolate chip cookies  -- all at a price that wouldn’t break the bank.  No one could match the quality, convenience and price of the dine-in, take-out, delivery and catering services of Café 324.

After a lifetime of working Smitty realized it was time to pass the business along. His Nephew, who had worked with Smitty when he was a young lad knew this was what he was meant to do and expanded the business so everyone in the city could come see and taste for themselves what the Millyard secret was all about.

Within a few years Smitty’s nephew found that another millworker had found herself quite smitten with him.  She would arrive daily, order her lunch and just take in everything going on behind the scenes, never saying much more than “Thank you”, but all the while daydreaming out loud about him to any co-worker that would listen.  Eventually, a conversation began and they have been inseparable ever since.

The years ahead were happy with hard work, but filled with joy and fun!  Then out of nowhere a dark cloud appeared seeming to hang around forever.  The evil warlord and the trolls had come to rear their ugly heads.
Not caring for what the Millworkers really wanted, The Smitty’s like others before them were forced to leave.

After an eternity of searching, the Smitty’s have landed in a new spot.  A place where they can grow, reinvent themselves all the while not far from the old, (actually it just down the buggy trail, across the bridge take the 3rd left and go straight to their new home LOL)

It’s time for the next generation to learn, Yes Miss E.B is here and already taking over her own little part of the world all while capturing everyone’s heart.  As his Uncle had taught him, EB will learn what to do and get to know her Great Uncle’s recipes in the hopes that one day she too will want to take over.

While some classics have stayed and some of your favorites may have retired, we’ve expanded the menu, the days and the hours. Uncle Smitty’s quest continues to live on with the whole Smitty Family and they are committed to provide you fresh quality, uplifting food just as Uncle Smitty did back in the day only now sharing it with even more people in our little part of the world.

Come and enjoy the NEW 324 GRILL.
We’ve missed all our friends and can’t wait to meet the new ones!
